Born in 1939, in the small town of Henry, Tennessee, Jones first discovered his musical gift singing in his church choir. He took his talents to Nashville in 1968, carving out a niche as a gospel music television program producer and host.



His defining moment came in 1980 with the launch of his television show, Bobby Jones Gospel. Premiering just two days after Black Entertainment Television (BET) itself, the show became a cornerstone of the network and a landmark in cable television history. Bobby Jones Gospel introduced audiences to a vibrant array of gospel music artists, as well as behind-the-scenes segments and intimate artist interviews, all under the charismatic guidance of Dr. Jones himself. The show's unique blend of performance, passion, and personality set it apart, propelling it to an extraordinary 35-season run from 1980 to 2015.

The program earned the distinction of being the longest-running original series on cable television , a testament to its enduring appeal and cultural significance.Simultaneously, Jones was also making his mark in the recording industry. His discography includes several beloved albums, with songs covered by illustrious artists such as Barbara Mandrell, Whitney Houston, and Kirk Franklin.

In recognition of his significant contributions to gospel music and his transformative influence on the genre, Dr. Bobby Jones has received a cascade of awards. Among these accolades are a Grammy Award, a Dove Award, three Stellar Awards, and the Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legends Award at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards in 2022. Furthermore, his enduring influence and outstanding contributions were recognized when he was presented with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award.


In addition to these honors, Jones was also bestowed with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2022.
